Online Dating And Counseling Services: Disconcerting Facts About Your Next Online Date

October 27, 2007

It's interesting, as a professional purveyor of helpful online information to a very ( small ) but loyal readership, it is my job to seek out and discover important trends that you need to be aware of to make informed decisions.  Which is one of the reasons I founded TheTruthAboutOnlineDating.Org.  ( That of course, and the hope that I might actually meet someone on here as desperate for a date as I am, especially considering Winter is coming)

Now here is an important trend that you should be aware of.  According to my keword research, one of the more frequently searched phrases related to Online Dating is the following string of words - "online dating and counseling services".  Just a bit more than 1200 searches a month.

Now - I don't know about you, but I find this a bit troubling..  I mean - I'm not so sure I'm looking to meet a woman who is looking for a date - and some professional mental health help all in one short mouse click.  But that might just be me.  I think I'd prefer she actually got the help first, then joined Match.com - or whatever it is.  Take care of your issues, then put up the profile.  That's my preference anway.

Thankfully there weren't too many searches for "find an online date and where to get a lithium refill" - which I did also check to make sure.  Especially considering I've got a 7PM coffee date with a woman who told me her digital camera was broken or she'd have a few pictures posted - which I always fall for, mostly because I'm getting desperate, and of course, Winter is coming

Singapore Says Hello To Speed Dating!

October 18, 2007

speed dating.jpgIt's always interesting to read how different cultures interpret the online dating experience and assimilate a changing stream of values into their social fabric.  I have a very Shakespearean quality, don't you think?  The poetry just flows from my keyboard - which is why I'm such a big hit on Eharmony.  It might have been easier to say - Singaporeans getting in on the getting laid online international craze - because, well that's just about what another * speed dating * site really means.  But I'm paid the big bucks to go deep and analyze for you folks.  Anyway - you can read the full story at the link below..:-)

Speed dating for Web-savvy execsTHINK of it as Facebook for singles. Combining webcam-enabled chatting, interactive games and forums, a new dating website launched yesterday looks set to be the first local site to also offer online speed dating here..Conceptualised by the same people who brought love back into lunch, Eteract.com is the brainchild and subsidiary of popular dating agency Lunch Actually..According to co-founder Violet Lim, the foray into online dating is a move to tap into the recent boom in social networking websites. "'Real-life' dating is effective in its own way, but at the same time, we realise the Internet is a very good way for people to meet. It would be a waste not to tap into the potential of the Internet to bring people together," she said..Apart from meeting like-minded singles on special interest clubs, members can try virtual speed dating where they interact with each other via webcam, online chatting or even voice chatting, in short "dates" of five to eight minutes. At the end of each session, participants can choose the person they would like to exchange profile information with and Eteract will link "matched" members via email..Joining as a member is free and in a few months, members can purchase credits to buy items to dress up their online avatars and access special functions..Aimed at Internet-savvy 20- to 40-year-old single professionals and executives, Ms Lim said Eteract.com combines the "convenience and affordability" of online dating with the ability to verify members' identity and marital status, unlike most other dating websites..Eteract.com is in the process of getting accredited so that by next year, the website will be able to screen and verify a member's marital status with the Registry of Marriages and Muslim Marriages. Members, too, can make their profiles private and place limits on who can access their information..These elements and the good track record of Lunch Actually are what made the website idea stand out, said Ms Claire Chiang, chairperson of the Romancing Singapore project. She is also co-chair of the Partner Connection Fund evaluation panel, from which Eteract.com received a start-up grant of $49,000.."It's got all the elements and link-ups to create the buzz that we are looking for to make Singapore a more romantic place," said Ms Chiang. She pointed out that the website connects the virtual to the real world, as it also organises meet-ups and other activities.."With other social networking sites, it is more passive and there is no follow-up, but with activities organised, it helps to realise the objective of finding love." Laughing, Ms Chiang added: "If I'm not married, I'd try it!" —

Online Dating Horror Stories: What You Need to Know Before Hitting Send

October 10, 2007

Everyfunny online dating storiesone Lies on their online dating profiles. Errr…maybe not everyone - but most of us do. I mean - where else can I be 6'5, 23 and just coming back from a year in India spent in deep contemplation where I discovered the true meaning of life? Work? Of course not. They see I'm 5'9 1/2 even with my Cole Haans ( but without the 1/2 inch shoe lifts I keep hidden in my desk drawer for special occasions and new hires).

But on Match.com - I can be anyone I want. Apparently - so can alot of you..:-)

Here is a funny article about Do's and Don'ts when reading the profile of that person who " just may be the one..".

You can read the full story at the link below:

Everyone's doing it - over 40 percent of U.S. singles are finding matches online. That's more than 40 million single Americans cruising the Internet looking for love (based on census results that say there are over 100 million single Americans). So the Internet must be a great place to find true love, right? Not so fast. While online dating can be a great way to find someone new, dating sites are littered with scam artists, cheaters, and straight-up liars. Now, this doesn't mean you should avoid online dating altogether — just don't believe everything you see out there. In order to help sort out the winners from the losers, we've compiled a list of the top five types of online daters you should definitely avoid, along with some tips to help you save some heartache. Be careful out there, and good luck!1. LiarsIn a recent survey, it was found that most online profiles contain some sort of lie, whether it's the person's age or — in some cases — relationship status. White lies — adding an inch to height or dropping a couple pounds — are the most common and not a big deal to most people.Consider these facts according to the April 2007 issue of Proceedings of Computer/Human Interaction: * About 52.6 percent of men lie about their height, as do 39 percent of women. * Slightly more women lie about their weight (64.1 percent) than men (60.5 percent). * When it comes to age, 24.3 percent men lie compared with 13.1 percent of women. But when it comes to misrepresenations of age or relationship status, it's a a whole other matter entirely. In one recent case, a woman met a man on a popular dating site with whom she immediately hit it off. She even put her life on hold to go with him to Dubai when he was transferred for work. Eleven months into the relationship, she came across an e-mail — from his son! What's more, the e-mail said something about "Mom" saying hi. In one fell swoop, our poor girl found out the man she met online was not only a father — he was married! She moved back to the United States and has given up on online dating since.
